The design of the urban expansion in Eilandje in Antwerp follows the intention of a horizontal compression in the area. The district is located in the north of the city and limited by the industrial harbor. We try to counteract the European idea of living in suburban one-family houses. But we want to develop a new district which will be attractive to house owners and for urban use as well. That is the reason why we created a district with a high density of courtyard houses, which doesn’t follow a constant structure.
Because of the missing frequency in structure the district is expandable and flexible. Private courts create a special interrelation to the interior unlike other house constructions. In addition to that the well developed infrastructure counteracts the time-consuming shuttle traffic in suburbia and connects it with Antwerp in a modern way. The urban development is supported by a mixed use of the area. It is affected by living houses, commerce and industry. The industrial nature of the area is preserved by conversion of the existing houses. We minded that the level of the buildings harmonizes with the level of the new buildings. To make sure that living in this area is attractive we placed different public places and boulevards in the city centre. In addition to that we set a promenade in the south which interacts with the planned pedestrian bridge over the water as a gateway to the new area. In our design we require a great social mix, high density, low traffic and a pedestrian friendly area that allows working and living in a great environment. A new district with cultural aesthetic in Antwerp.
