Starting 1993 the Antwerp harbor area is going through a fundamental change in structure. 'Het Eilandje' is a waste land of industry and is not in use anymore nowadays, it is supposed to be replaced into a high qualified expansion of the inner city. The Project 'Independent Eilandje' deals with a conceptual design for the central development areas Mexicoeiland/Kempeneiland (Fase2).
It is to create a concept for the island-like area, which handles the diverse influences of the nearby city center but also the heavy industries in the neighboring areas. These both aspects are on highest priority in the development of this design. Another Aspect affecting the Eilandje is the motorway coming from the north, which serves as a connection between living areas and industry. To satisfy both uses the course of the motorway is to be new orientated and the differences in level and height are matched with the level of the Independent Eilandje. This transforms the motorway which was in a disruptive fact in the area before now to an accepted part of the public and private life. To integrate Independent Eilandje homogenous in the surrounding area some of the nearby streets are changed and new alignments are defined. Mexicoeiland is meant to be a barrier to the heavy industry areas, which is made by new house buildings which are related to the typical Belgian serial houses. All these houses have a direct connection to the water which strengthens water as an essential element in the development of the city.

Morphologie


Seit 1993 unterzieht sich das ehemalige innerstädtische Antwerpener Hafengebiet einen grundlegenden Strukturwandel. Die wenig genutzte Industriebrache „Het Eilandje“ soll Schritt für Schritt einer qualitativ hochwertigen Stadterweiterung weichen.
Das Independet Eilandje befasst sich mit einem Entwurfskonzept für die zentral gelegenen Entwicklungsgebiete Mexicoeiland/Kempeneiland (Fase 2).
Es gilt ein passendes Konzept für das inselartige Baugebiet zu entwickeln, welches sich den verschiedenen äußeren Einflüssen durch die Nähe zum Stadtkern, aber auch als Nahtstelle zur Antwerpener Schwerindustrie, widmet. Folgerichtig unterliegt der Umgang mit diesen beiden maßgeblichen Nutzungsvarianten oberste Priorität. Als weiteres ausschlaggebendes Element der Insel wird eine aus Norden kommende Autobahn gesehen, die als Verbindungsglied zwischen Industrie- und Wohngebiet fungiert.
Damit diese Autobahn auf beide Nutzungen gleichermaßen reagiert, wird ihr ursprünglicher Verlauf neu definiert und der ehemalige Höhenunterschied dem Höhenniveau des Independet Eilandje angepasst. Dies hat zur Folge, dass die ehemals als Fremdkörper erscheinende Autobahn nun fester Bestandteil des öffentlichen und privaten Lebens wird.
Um das Independet Eilandje homogen in die Umgebung einzufügen, werden einige der umliegenden Straßenzüge wasserübergreifend in das Entwurfskonzept integriert. Darüber hinaus werden neue Fluchtlinien definiert, die sich der Autobahn oder anderen markanten Stellen hingeben.
Als wesentliches Konzept bildet Mexicoeiland aus der Bebauung heraus eine Barriere zur umliegenden Schwerindustrie. Diese besteht aus einer langen Aneinanderreihung von kleinteiligen Reihenhäusern, angelehnt an des typisch belgische Reihenhaus. Sämtliche Häuser besitzen zur Rückseite einen direkten Wasserzugang um das Wasser als wesentliches Element der Stadtentwicklung zu stärken.

In the south of Mexicoeiland there is to be a designed clearance the center of public life. Inspired by a typical Spanish Rambla (which means street to the sea) a wide place opens itself to the sea. This place is to be an element of connection to the habor but also as a street to stroll around and shop in diverse shops or market sides. The rambla gets strengthened by arcades that flank the site. At the other end the rambla gets a completion by a scholar building. By designing Independent Eilandje 'slow urbanism' is great influence which is a symbol for the Antwerp character.
