„Haifa/Bremen – Urban Cities 2030 – Density, Social Mixture, Technology “
A cooperation of the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning (Technion Haifa, Israel) and the School of Architecture (Hochschule Bremen, Germany) supported by the German-Israeli Future Forum, organized by Zvika Koren, Karsten Meyer, Dr. Orit Shmueli and Prof. Klaus Schäfer.
Within an exchange project of urban design of two universities, respective the departments of planning administration of the twin cities Haifa and Bremen we worked – after the conversion of a heterogeneous district in Haifa (winter 2019-20) – on a manly homogeneous district in Bremen Hemelingen, the industrial area of Hastedt.
The field of our studies about 50 hectares was considered by the assumption of a compact city with mixed used, density, diversity and a preferably small-scaled structure – a district of short distances. In the concepts was the preservation of the building stock, a phased planning and the connection with the neighboring quarters essential. Regarding a debate about a content of the future forms of employment and housing, an international symposium was the kick-off for our workshop in the premises of LDW. The keynote-lecture was given by Markus Schaefer (The Industrious City — Industrie. Stadt, Urban Industry in the Digital Age) from Zurich and by video from Prof. Mark Brearley, Urban Design, London (“A Good City Has Industry”) and Lee Wellington, New York (Urban Manufacturing Alliance-UMA) gave short speeches as input for a common discussion. Therefor were invited representatives of the main industrial companies in the area the swb (major energy supplier of Bremen) and the Lloyd Dynamowerke (LDW, motor manufacturer), further stakeholder of the city and the planning administration of Bremen (SKUMS).
The project was developed by the help and assistance from the following association and people: Prof.-Dr. Iris Reuther, Chief of the planning department and Sarah-Carina Bruhse (SKUMS), Chris Steinbrecher (Ogohaus), Christoph Kolpatzik (swb AG), Dr.-Ing. Maximilian Lachenmaier, Tim Lachenmaier and Uwe Deeken (LDW) and Nina Möllering (Tutor).
All projects realized in this cooperation have been discussed by an expert audience during an exhibition from the Technion at the Hadarion in Haifa at March 2022. A selection is now presented on the following pages.

Eine von der Stiftung Deutsch-Israelisches Zukunftsforum geförderte Kooperation der Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning (Technion Haifa, Israel) und der School of Architecture (Hochschule Bremen), organisiert von Zvika Koren, Karsten Meyer, Dr. Orit Shmueli und Prof. Klaus Schäfer.
Im Rahmen eines städtebaulichen Austausch-Projekts zweier Hochschulen, den jeweiligen Stadtplanungsämtern der Partnerstädte Haifa und Bremen bearbeiteten wir – nach der Konversion eines sehr heterogenen Stadtgebiets in Haifa im Wintersemester 2019/2020 – mit dem Hastedter Industriegebiet einen überwiegend homogenen Stadtteil von Bremen Hemelingen.
Der etwa 50 Hektar große Untersuchungsbereich wurde von uns unter der Prämisse eine funktionsgemischten, dichten, möglichst kleinteiligen und sozial gemischten „Stadt der kurzen Wege“ betrachtet. Maßgeblich für die Konzepte war die Nutzung des Bestandes, wie eine phasenweise Entwicklung und eine Verknüpfung mit den Nachbarquartieren. Inhaltlich war die Diskussion zukünftiger Erwerbs- und Wohnformen Bestandteil eines gemeinsamen Workshops in den Räumen der LDW, der mit einem internationalen Symposium startete. Als Hauptreferent war Markus Schaefer (The Industrious City — Industrie. Stadt, Urban Industry in the Digital Age) aus Zürich vor Ort, Prof. Mark Brearley, Urban Design, London (“A Good City Has Industry”) und Lee Wellington, New York (Urban Manufacturing Alliance / UMA) haben per Video zusätzlich ein Input-Referat gehalten. Der Diskussion wohnten neben Vertretern der beiden größten Industrie-Bereiche swb (Hauptenergieversorger von Bremen) und der Lloyd Dynamowerke, weitere Stakeholder der Stadt und das Stadtplanungsamt (SKUMS) bei.
Das Projekt ist unter der Hilfe und Mitwirkung folgender Organisationen und Personen entstanden:
Prof.-Dr. Iris Reuther, Senatsbaudirektorin und Sarah-Carina Bruhse (SKUMS), Chris Steinbrecher (Ogohaus), Christoph Kolpatzik (swb AG), Dr.-Ing. Maximilian Lachenmaier, Tim Lachenmaier und Uwe Deeken (LDW) und Nina Möllering (Tutorin).
Alle in der Kooperation entstanden Projekte wurden im Rahmen einer Ausstellung des Technion März 2022 im Hadarion in Haifa mit einem Fachpublikum diskutiert. Eine Auswahl dieser Projekte wird hier präsentiert.
