MASTERSTUDIENGANG - ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
Bremen Hastedt – Industrious City
Industrial City Hastedt
Florian Giesbrecht, Till Schinke, Ingmar Gimm, Winter semester 2021/22 – SoAB

Site
The project site is located in Hastedt in the eastern part of Bremen. A dominant structure and a landmark for the neighborhood is the SWB power plant. The former coal plant with it´s high towering structures sits right next to the river Weser. The surrounding area has mostly industrial use with large lots. It is part of the Hemelinger Hafen, an industrial port south of the site. West of the site sits the Weserwehr which is a waterdriven power plant. The Weserwehr is surrounded by greenery along the Weser. North to the site above the Pfalzburgerstraße perimeter blocks are located. To the east there is a large Flyover which connects the area to the Autobahn.

Concept
In order to transform Hastedt into an urban area, the neighborhood should open up and become more permeable to the outside, linking surrounding districts. It becomes part of the city fabric. Through different interventions such as reconstruction, punctual densification and the opening of entrances and pathways the area will transform and connect to the urban fabric. The industrial character of the neighborhood is preserved, and the production will remain in the area. Historic industrial sites will be reused and provide an urban identification. With the possibilities of Industry 4.0 it is possible to create an urban neighborhood that contains housing, urban production, retail and cultural use.
