Nantes – an upcoming former seaport marks the starting point of a belt (l’estuaire) of the river Loire to the Atlantic coast. Here in the west of France in the region Loire-Atlantique where the river Erdre and Sèvre flows in, as well a sequence of prominent and famous châteaus along the Loire ends with the Château des ducs de Bretagne in the city. After a long lean time of structural change like in all European cities with maritime industries meanwhile Nantes has been transformed to an exemplary reform of the region and the country. Today the city is considered as core of one of the fast-growing regions in France.
South of the historic center of Nantes the hospital l‘Hôtel-Dieu is situated, the today’s university hospital CHU (Centre hospitalier universitaire). The area of about 12 ha at the river will be relocated in the near future. On the former harbor sight l’Île de Nantes in the south of the city an extensive new part is under construction since 2000 creating a new midst of the association Nantes Métropole (in total 600,000 inhabitants, Nantes with 290,000). This region with a current increasing dynamic has a growth of population too. The Île de Nantes will be from 2025 also the location of the new university hospital. That means a central construction field becomes fallow which already has the character of a district. How this could become a city quarter we want to proof with the urban design in our exhibit projects.

During a workshop at autumn 2015 at the ENSAN (Ecole nationale supérieure d'architecture de Nantes) with Jean-Marie Beslou, Prof. Dr. Laurent Lescop and Prof. Dirk Janssen (Universiteit Antwerpen) and students form Antwerp too we studied the city and the location and developed first concepts together. These ideas have been discussed with the urban planner Jean-Pierre Brindel, adviser of urban development (Métropole de Nantes) giving the fundament of our projects.

The exposed work represents a selection of framework plans or masterplans in sense of an urban design development. They reveal the scope of the location but on the adjoined quarters also. The central significance of the former clinic area for the whole city of Nantes becomes apparent.
In detail one could realize the potential of the waterfront and its cultivation or how far the quarter stock of the neighborhood could be integrated. From far beyond even an urban repair of past mistakes (orientation on private transport) could be under task with current technical possibilities and an altered view on a sustainable and urban development of the city center. Therefor parts of traffic routing and oversized parking areas will be transformed in favour of a quality of the public space. The principle of ‘internal development before external development’ such as ‘the city of short distances’ will be transformed to build areas.
