Mapping Art is an art form from the time of the modern era. In the following we will take a look at examples from the artist Joyce Kozloff. In the era of the modern age, nothing new has arisen in the art. They rather used old material/old forms which where brought together playfully. While the Modernism wanted to overcome tradition, postmodernism saw the past as something of great value. In the history of architecture postmodernism was even called the "architecture of memory“ which tells the story of the buildings.

The buildings partly tell their own story. Through the use of jewelry, ornaments, symbols and traces of gone eras, the different meanings can be worked out. The artists of the time reinterpreted these symbolisms for themselves.
They have extended this to their own characteristic – the provocative and colorful colors. The most commonly used mapping art technique is the collage.

They are mostly expressive, funny, cheeky, emotional, lustful, poetic and ironic. Because the maps are endlessly flexible, manipulatable, reproducible and unstable for the artists and also serve.
For them, the maps of cartography served as an astonishingly fertile material for them to convey an expression and intervention (their public perception) which they combined with collages. The artists were inspired by the maps. They also refer to the location, the movement and the reference points. For the depictions of the artist, the complete signs, borders, frames, lines, scale or gridlines weren ́t included in the first place. Hence why no grid exist!
Mapping Art is mostly drawn freehand and represents an abstract study of colors and movements. The maps are moved within the artwork and displayed in a completely different way.
In general, the world maps are accepted and acknowledged, but nevertheless, the artists with the art maps represent a different world and create a new story from it. The artists particularly focus on the freedom of movement. They do not analyze the location, but comment on it by working with the colors, their feelings and other emotional qualities that connect them to this place. Which means that they also want to convey a new, different message, not a purely geographical or scientific one. A goal that they are pursuing too, is to make individual points of view visible in the maps and particularly visible through their work technique.
As a result, Mapping Art focuses on unconscious memories and experimental forms of presentations combined with bright colors. The artists "see the world with new eyes".
