Mittelalterliche Stadtbaukunst in der Toskana - Wolfgang Braunfels
Fiona Hatje, Dennis Witte, 31.03.2018

Most of the Tuscan cities are of ancient origins, shaped by ancient ways of life: walls, gates, streets, markets, arcades, fountains, temples. The city was represented in the middle ages by the wall rings that symbolized the sphere of heaven and circles of hell, as well as the churches located at the city gates and the paths that connected them. This arrangement of cities resulted in a cross on the map and was based on the eternal city of Rome and the holy city of Jerusalem. The design and size of the city initially moved into the background.

The foundation of the city began with the construction of the wall, which itself was seen as a building. The completion of the wall was the ultimate goal, so that it could be consecrated and "filled". It was not considered finished until everyone had been provided with a building inside.
Later, the wall became a symbol, not only by size, but also by the decoration as a representative of a city. Here, attention was paid to the beauty of the stones, gates and towers, the regularity of the figure, as well as the similar material and the number of gates, which should correspond to the sacred number. As a sign of strength, sculptures of lions and saints were dedicated, which were consecrated by the patron saint or the Madonna. The wall was the symbol of the city, because within the wall you created law, security and order. The construction costs were divided according to "Justinian" by church, king and the citizens. Out of this administration emerged some of the oldest financial institutions in the world.

Next to the wall, the churches were considered as the first stage of urban architecture, responsible for the salvation of souls living within the wall. The bigger the city became and the more wall rings were planned for enlargement, the bigger the churches became. Later, they were considered a status symbol and city decor and were richly decorated. They symbolized the prestige and rank of a city, which was defined by the number and splendour of the churches. Until the 14th century, churches were not only the spiritual, but also the secular centre of a city. Then palazzos were built, which represented the antipode to the spiritual centre and became the symbol of state power. They had apartments of the Priori, meeting rooms and were expanded into a fortress with its own defences. Architecturally, this was illustrated by the integration of the wall as a cornice and its own watchtower, which also served as a prison.

As the first private fortresses of a city residential towers were built by nobles. The height and number of towers in the Tuscan towns was an expression of prosperity, fame and beauty. So if you wanted to conquer a city, you destroyed the towers first. But not only the towers or the houses were of symbolic importance.

Water was and is the greatest treasure in Tuscany. After the care and promotion of the walls and churches, the care of the fountains was the most important task of the authorities of a city. The fountain Fonte Branda in Siena was originally located outside the city walls and was therefore equipped with its own fortification. Later, each town square had to have a fountain not only to supply the city, but also as a decoration. In the construction guidelines of fountains shape, material, size and capacity, as well as location, decor and name were defined.

In the Middle Ages, the Roman road was considered ideal, consisting of a road network that crossed in the core of the city and formed the market. Streets always led to open spaces and were considered as place to live, the open space as a place to act, for celebrations and politics. The streets were divided into main roads, public roads and private roads and each had a minimum width. They were paved straight and carefully to keep them cleaner and to improve the health of the residents. Likewise, the carefully patched plaster and a smooth material made a city significant. On the streets, houses of the same size were built close to each other, with no gaps. Each street had a trade to point out clarity and order. The houses were built of a similar material and followed outline principles. Annexes, doors and windows that did not follow this principle were not tolerated or subsequently dismantled.

Buildings that formed a square followed the same strict regulations as the "normal" street space. Stems and road breaks were restricted by taxes and only allowed for a minimum height of buildings. Upon demolition of a building requires the consent of the authorities and usually the material of the demolition had to be used, unless a planned new building should arise at this point. In order to maintain the overall picture of a city and to guarantee its preservation, institutions were founded.

Building supervisors were created, with appraisers, site managers, surveyors, notaries and judges responsible for a metropolitan area, as well as civic committees for the supervision of building officials and, as a result, law books taught at universities to consolidate norms and guidelines in urban planning. In order to cope with urban sprawl, major meetings were held annually until the 15th century, during which the entire construction industry was discussed and a master plan for the city passed. One tried again and again to find a law of order in chaos and redefined the city in its dimensions. The more irregular the growth became, the harder the provisions in the building code became. So there was no construction freedom in Tuscany until the Renaissance.
