Kyriat Eliezer is a garden city build in the 50s and located in the northern Israeli city of Haifa.
The concept creates public spaces with a defined edge by ad-ding a classic block-typology around the districts that are created by a new primary development network.
That way the connection between different parts of the city is improved through the built structure and the public squares. The existing buildings shall be preserved, renovated and expanded. While taking measures to ensure greater earthquake resilience.
In the fallow areas, a combination of said classic block-typology with smaller courtyard houses built back-to-back not only enables a ‘low rise / high density’ city structure but also offers space for common squares and creates a transition to the compartmentalized district Bat Galim in the north.
By creating an underground railway passage, expanding the existing bus network and integrating mobility hubs the existing traffic routes can be relieved and barriers in the city disappear.
The concept presented here is intended to breathe new life into Kiryat Eliezer, to build a bridge between past and future and offer an alternative to the demolition of the district with sustainability in mind.
