The International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg at Veddel, Harburg and Wilhelmsburg, Europe’s largest populated river island, is one of the greatest urban development projects in Europe. It is dealing with the most pressing issues facing modern cities. Seventy projects including residential units, commercial spaces, educational establishments and huge green spaces, have been realized until 2013. Wilhelmsburg and especially “Reiherstiegviertel” is home to people from more than one hundred nations and shows how urban development and architecture can fight against social and cultural barriers.
