Smart Cities - Solution for our Cities?

Statistics show that over the years more and more
people were moving into cities.
Due to special rights for citizens living inside the city walls and more opportunities for work the number of townspeople rose from 7 % in 1700 ...
...to 30 % in 1950.
This number increases
In 2017 it is more than half of our population. And the number increases rapidly. So that it is predicted ...
...that in 2050 it will be 65%.
And irrevocably such great numbers come with a lot of problems.
Not only are even most of us here suffering from an
acute housing shortage...
...due to more and more emissions from traffic and
nearby industries the air gets less breathable by the hour. And resources will not last forever.
A possible solution could be the smart cities. In the
center of this idea is the human being and its needs.
The different characteristics that gauge the effectivity of smart cities are a smart environment, which aims at the conservation and improvement of our environment and its sustainability, ....
… smart living, which means possibilities of saving energy or even producing energy with solar panels or other smart appliances ...
… smart mobility, includes smart street signs and traffic lights or apps for transportation etc ...
… smart people are the backbone for every endeavor and community and a sharing culture are an important part of a smart city. Things like urban gardening, car sharing and the willingness to share information...
… smart administration is responsible for the infrastructure of a smart city and provides communication and safety...
… and smart economy, which knows of the importance of education and exchange of knowledge and promotes this.
These characteristics are all connected and rely on each other.

... disposal and waste management
... solar energy
... Sustainability
Smart Living includes...
... smart homes
... apps etc.
Smart mobility has...
... apps (parking or transportation)
... charging station
... traffic lights
... lighting
Smart people

Urban Gardening/ other projects
Sharing spirit
Smart administration provides...

... open data etc.
... cctv (closed-circuit television)/ surveillance
Smart economy is sponsoring of education and other projects like co-working-spaces
And all those little aspects are connected as well in some way. For example you are driving your car in the city and looking for a parking space.
The smart surveillance system checks all available parking and you are informed...
...via app about the nearest free parking lot.
This helps the environment because you do not emit as much CO² while driving aimlessly.
Which makes an smart environment.
And that is just a little example for this
“Internet of Everything”.
And even here we just scratched the surface.
In the end the question remains: if the idea of such a smart city could be the solution for our problems. What do you think?

As we go forward especially in the technical realm we come across old problems disguised in new technicalities. How save is our property, intellectual or otherwise? How much are we dependent on appliances? What do we really want to share and what has to remain private? How much information is an authority allowed to know about us and maybe use against us?
