The project results from the collaboration of Prof. Carmen Andriani (DAD, Genoa), Prof. Klaus Schäfer (SoAB) and the landscape architect Christina Kautz, Berlin.
Some impressions of the city
La Spezia with its less than 100,000 inhabitants is still one of the mane base of the Italian navy. Its strategical important location is a port of trade and cruise also. With the consideration of a future development and removal of the waterfront in establishing an easier and prestigious pier to the liners the urban design of the seaside of La Spezia is under question. One important point is the integration of the culture heritage of the city in this context and the navy museum is one of the highlights in La Spezia. The admiralty wants to establish the relationship between the future harborside and the location of their national naval museum. The Background of our project are joint plans of the municipality and the admiralty for the navy port.
Prof. Carmen Andriani from the Università degli Studi di Genova was asked to develop with her master-students scenarios of the place and the urban setting of the museum. Kindly she invited us to joint this studies with the master-students from Bremen. In a workshop in La Spezia and at the Dipartimento Architettura Genoa we developed together analysis and first concepts of the urban design of the urban harbour front. Back in Bremen we have continued our work to conceive certain master plans at different places at the waterfront of La Spezia. Our project leads to an exhibition at the School of Architecture Bremen in February 2018. Selected proposals are now presented here on the following pages.
In the winter semester 2018/19 we envisage to develop plans for the navy museum also. This project will be conceived as a collaboration between the Dipartimento Architettura Genoa and Prof. Maria Clarke, School of Architecture Bremen.
Das Projekt entstand aus einer Zusammenarbeit von Prof. Carmen Andriani (Genua), Prof. Klaus Schäfer (SoAB) und der Landschaftsarchitektin Christina Kautz.
Für die Hafenkante der Stadt La Spezia, Hauptsitz der Italienischen Marine am Ligurischen Meer, mit etwa 100.000 Einwohner, haben wir während des Wintersemesters Rahmenpläne entwickelt, die nun in unserer Präsentation aus Modellen und Zeichnungen ausgestellt werden. Unsere Konzepte dazu wurden in Kooperation mit Studenten aus Genua in einem Workshop vor Ort und am Dipartimento Architettura hergestellt.
Hintergrund des Projekts sind die gemeinsamen Pläne der Kommune und der Admiralität des Militärhafens. Zum einen den Hafen für den Passagierverkehr näher an die Stadtkante zu verlagern und damit verbunden den Zugang zum nationalen Marinemuseum, seine Disposition, sowie die Erscheinung des Museums selbst, zu überdenken. Dies führt zu einer notwendigen grundsätzlichen Betrachtung der Verflechtung des urbanen Raumes zum Meer und der Militärbereiche.
Im Wintersemester 2018/2019 planen wir auch Entwürfe für das Marinemuseum von La Spezia zu entwickeln.
In memory to Rudolf Jacobs
During our profound investigations during the accompanied research we discovered a particular circumstance of relationship between La Spezia and Bremen. The Bremer Rudolf Jacobs deployed as naval officer by the German Nazis during world war II in La Spezia deserted and became member of local partisans Resistenza. He died during an aggression against barracks of the fascists.

Während unserer Untersuchungen im Begleitseminar zu diesem Projekt entdeckten wir diese besondere Beziehung zwischen La Spezia und Bremen. Der Bremer Rudolf Jacobs, stationiert als Offizier der nationalsozialistischen Marine im 2. Weltkrieg in La Spezia, desertierte und trat dem lokalen Widerstand (Resistenza) bei. Er starb während eines Angriffs auf Kasernen der Faschisten.
